10DLC – What Changed?
The messaging service that uses a 10-digit phone number was first envisioned as a peer-to-peer communication medium. Carriers are only meant for it to be used in private settings.
Carriers have recommended that organizations that use A2P (Application-to-Person) communication utilize toll-free numbers or shortcode numbers using five or six digits to send bulk text messages. However, short code numbers were prohibitively costly, and consumers associated toll-free (non-local) calls with fraudulent activity.
As a consequence, commercial enterprises have adopted the more inexpensive 10-digit long code option. The volume of transmitted messages skyrocketed when companies began sending communications on channels designed for private, low-traffic exchanges.
However, spammers jumped on the bandwagon. And the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) took notice of this.
To receive A2P messages on their network, providers now require enterprises to register for 10DLC. If you don’t sign up, your carrier may apply more stringent filters on your message traffic.
Why 10 DLC?
With 10DLC as their A2P channel, enterprises may enjoy the following advantages.
Improved Compliance and Deliverability
The use of 10DLC for A2P communications has recently gained support from all of the cellular operators in the United States. Text messages that do not adhere to the standards set out by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) are subject to being blocked by mobile carriers.
Since 10DLC was authorized for SMS commercial communications, there has been an increase in the reliable deliverability of SMS messages. If your major competitors still use classic long codes or shared shortcodes for A2P SMS communication, your messages have a greater chance of reaching the intended recipients.
Leverage existing voice numbers
Text messaging does not need the acquisition of a new number for businesses. You can convert current voice numbers, including landlines, so that A2P 10DLC messages may be sent using these numbers. Being able to engage with clients using phone numbers they are already familiar with is fantastic news for marketers. After all, it won’t be easy to re-engage previous consumers with their new numbers.
High throughput
Traditional long code has a throughput of 1 MPS (Message per Second). The throughput of 10 DLC will be larger than that of long codes (but lower than that of shortcodes). Because of this, your employees can interact with consumers more quickly, even on a large scale.
Local Number Recognition
Compared to the open rate of messages received from foreign numbers, the open rate for texts sent from a local number is much greater. Customers are more likely to respond to and trust ads that come from a local business.
Enhanced Brand Recognition
Establishing trust between your business and your consumers is crucial to retaining them. Customers are more likely to remember and associate your brand with a 10-digit long code with a local area code than with an anonymous shortcode.
